How accurate is browser-based OCR?

For cleanly printed documents with good lighting, expect accuracy above 95%. Accuracy drops for crumpled or shadowed photos, low-resolution screenshots, and stylized fonts. A straight-on, well-lit photo gives the best result.

Does it recognize non-English or non-Latin text?

English and Latin-script languages, including accents and diacritics, work well out of the box. Other scripts such as Arabic, Cyrillic, or Devanagari need larger language models — support varies, so test with a sample before relying on it for a full document.

Is my image uploaded for processing?

No. Recognition uses Tesseract.js, which downloads to your browser once and then runs entirely on your device. Your image never reaches a server, which matters when you are pulling text off an ID card, an invoice, or private notes.

Why is the first scan slow?

On first use the recognition engine downloads to your browser and initializes, which is a few megabytes. Your browser caches it afterwards, so every later scan starts immediately.

Can it read handwriting?

Tesseract was trained on printed type, so neat block capitals are often readable while cursive or joined-up writing produces unreliable results.
